Living abroad is great. But there are some things you just can’t get.
For me, it’s certain cereals. The ones I grew up eating. The ones that taste like Saturday mornings in Mississippi.
Lately, even when I can find them, they’re expensive. Like, really expensive. I heard there’s a new government policy about imported ingredients, so the supply has slowed way down. Prices went up. Boxes got smaller.
I mentioned this to someone at a gingerbread house event I was hosting. Nothing fancy. Just some people getting together, making a mess with icing and candy.
I’d seen him around. A couple of other events before. We weren’t friends. Just familiar faces — the kind you nod to across a room.
So when he showed up at the gingerbread event, we made small talk. I don’t even remember how the cereal came up. Probably me just missing home out loud. “Ugh, I can’t find my favorite cereals anymore. And when I do, they’re so expensive.”
Just venting. Not asking for anything.
A week or so went by. Then he and his wife messaged me. Asked for my mailing address.
A few days later, a box showed up.
Inside: two boxes of each of my favorite cereals. Family size. The real ones.

I just stood there holding that box of cereal like it was gold. Because honestly? It kind of was.
This wasn’t a close friend. This was someone I’d seen around. Someone I’d exchanged nods with. And he went home, told his wife, and together they tracked down six boxes of cereal for a near-stranger.
That’s the thing about living abroad. You don’t have your village from back home. You have to build a new one.
And sometimes, that starts with showing up. Hosting an event. Mentioning the cereal you miss. Letting familiar faces become something more.
Because you never know who might send you six boxes of your favorite cereal.

So if you’re reading this and you’re new somewhere: go to the thing. Host the thing. Say yes. Mention the cereal.
You never know what might show up at your door.
Have you ever received an unexpected act of kindness while living abroad? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
